How to Know When You Need a Mold Inspection

Our homes are where we should feel the safest. But, some things invade our homes and threaten that feeling of security. One of the many things that can be menacing inside your home is mold. Mold causes all kinds of problems and can be a serious risk to the health of everyone who lives there.

Below are nine signs that you need a mold inspection in your home.

1. Visible Mold

If you see strange patches or spots around your walls, floors, or ceilings, you could have a mold problem. Some people think mold is just black but it can also appear green, brown, and white. Mold grows in areas where there is excessive moisture. It can even reach out to the furniture, giving off a fuzzy appearance.

2. Musty Odor

Have you ever forgotten to put a load of washed clothes in the dryer? When you open the washing machine you can smell that musty odor. That’s mildew, which can lead to mold. The odor can be described as woody, musty, or spoiled. Odors indicate that there can be mold in places that you can’t see, like the carpet.

3. Water Damage

It doesn’t take mold long to grow. In only two days mold will appear in exceptionally moist areas. When you see signs of water damage in your home, such as leaks, wood rot, and water stains, it’s important to have those areas checked for mold.

4. Allergic Reactions

If you or anyone in your family is experiencing headaches, sneezing, sore eyes, scratchy nose, and/or a stuffy head, then you may have a mold issue in your home. These can lead to larger issues down the line.

5. Constant Asthma Flare-Ups

Asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs that causes inflammation and a narrowing of the airways. This makes it difficult for the sufferer to breathe, and this condition could be triggered and even worsened by a mold outbreak in the home. If you or anyone in your home suffers from asthma and you suspect mold, we suggest you get that inspected as soon as you can.

6. Rashes

Rashes are another indication that you might have a mold issue in your home. In the presence of mold, your immune system could overreact to the spores, which causes an irritation of the skin. This is another sign that shouldn’t be ignored and taken care of right away.

7. Your Home Is Older

Some people want brand new structures while others like the feel of a vintage home. If you have an older home then it’s more likely to have mold because it’s been around longer. This longevity brought about more rainstorms, floods, and pipes breaking. So if your home is old, you should have it inspected.

8. Constant Water Leaks

Houses that have constant water leaks are likely to have mold. There is no way to know unless you have an inspection once you have the leaks fixed and the water issue controlled.

9. Peeling Wallpaper

If your wallpaper is peeling or seems to have warped, this could be a good indication that there’s mold and moisture behind that paper. Mold is something that needs to be taken care of right away because all it does is continue to grow.
