6 Home Maintenance Tips for Winter

As we enter the month of February, we can look forward to another month of cold winter weather before transitioning into the spring. At the close of January, the greater Charlotte region experienced some freezing temperatures. Is your home prepared for the next wave before warm weather returns? Take note of these six home maintenance tips you can take to ensure your home is winterized and ready!

Tip #1: Inspect And Clean Gutters

Gutters are notorious for a condition known as “ice-damming.” This condition is caused by a buildup of ice that appears along the edge of the roof and gutters. When some of the ice melts, it does not drain properly, thus causing water to collect and pool, potentially leaking inside the home. This condition can also severely damage the gutters and roof. By removing debris from gutters and downspouts, you can greatly prevent ice dams from occurring.

Tip #2: Perform Roof Maintenance

Check for any damaged roof shingles or flashing. Flashing is the metal seals/ strips that you see along the edge of the roof area or penetrations such as your chimney. Damage to these components can make access easy for pests and water. Some of these areas are sealed with caulk. Caulk can easily become brittle and break, forming gaps. If you need a roof inspection performed due to a lack of access, give your Fireline Inspections team a call!

Tip #3: Service HVAC System

For the last few months of winter, your HVAC system has consistently worked to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. If you notice any change in efficiency or your energy bill has increased, it is time to have your system looked at. This is also a good time to replace those air filters!

Tip #4: Check for Leaks and Insulate Pipes

Albeit, if you have not experienced a frozen or burst pipe in the last few weeks, you may have already completed this step. However, it serves to be a good reminder to inspect any piping located in the crawlspace or attic of your home. Freezing temperatures can greatly damage your pipes by freezing the water inside, and once it thaws, burst a water pipe. If you notice any pipes that are exposed, you can wrap them in insulation. These can be found inexpensively on Amazon.

Tip #5: Know When to Open/Close Crawlspace Vents

During freezing temperatures, it is important that your crawl space vents are closed to prevent freezing temperatures from affecting your plumbing pipes and internal temperature. Leaving vents open when it is cold can leak to extremely high energy bills and can also damage your HVAC system. On the flip side, when the temperature becomes warmer, it is equally important to open your vents. This allows your crawlspace to “breathe” and prevent excess humidity or mold from growing.
